Template - Date: Judgement Night in Betway Premier League – Cardiff

DAVE CHISNALL and Michael Smith were eliminated from the Betway Premier League with narrow defeats to Peter Wright and Phil Taylor on Judgement Night in Cardiff, as Robert Thornton completed his great escape.

Scottish star Thornton had picked up just one point from his opening six matches, but after picking up a win and a draw to move off the foot of the table a week ago in Liverpool the World Grand Prix champion’s survival was complete when his basement rivals both lost 7-5 at the Motorpoint Arena.

Chisnall never recovered from seeing Wright take an early 3-1 advantage in their clash, and though he took out 101 and 102 to stay in the hunt was unable to prevent the world number five claiming victory with a 13-darter in the game’s deciding leg.

Chisnall had picked up three points in the opening three weeks, but suffered six straight defeats from there as he followed up last year’s run to the semi-finals with elimination this time around.

1-0 – Anderson misses five darts at doubles for an immediate break of throw, allowing Wade back from two misses to hit double five for the opening leg. 2-0 – Two misses at tops from Anderson allow Wade to land double ten – with his third dart at the bed – to move two legs up. 3-0 – Anderson misses tops to finish 134, and Wade takes out 86 on double seven. 3-1 – Anderson lands the game’s first 180 before finally receiving a let-off from Wade, who is unable to punish misses in two visits from the Scot, who returns on double one. 4-1 – Anderson is again unable to land tops, and Wade pins double 14 to regain his cushion. 4-2 – Anderson fires in a second maximum and then takes out tops to respond once more. 4-3 – Anderson breaks throw by taking out 63 on double 12. 4-4 – Wade kicks off with a maximum, but Anderson replies with a 180 to leave 28 before hitting double seven to level. 5-4 – The pair trade 180s once again, before Wade lands double 12 to claim his first leg in four. 5-5 – Anderson levels once more, scoring 180 and 171 before finishing 52 on tops for a superb leg. 5-6 – Anderson takes out 81 on double six to move into the lead for the first time. 6-6 – Wade hits his third 180, and when Anderson misses tops for a 79 finish to claim the win, the left-hander takes out 62 on double ten to claim a draw.

German Darts Masters

European Tour Event 2 – Ballhausforum, Dolce Hotel, Munich

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN made it a perfect ten of European Tour titles as he came from behind to end Peter Wright’s German Darts Masters dreams and retain his crown in front of a sell-out crowd at the BallhausForum in Munich.

In a repeat of the Coral UK Open final earlier this month, neither player found their rhythm straight off in the final and it took van Gerwen 19 darts to open his account before Wright won two legs in a row, the second with double-double 18s.

And the Scot gave himself daylight at 3-1 courtesy of a 158 check-out before van Gerwen ramped up the pressure and eventually levelled with an 85 finish in leg eight. From then on, van Gerwen looked the likely winner and when Wright missed double 16 to force a deciding leg, the world number one clinched the £25,000 winner’s cheque with a 70 finish.

It was a difficult route to the final for the van Gerwen, but he showed his class throughout on day three. In the quarter-finals he produced a final leg worthy of a world number one and averaged 108 as he avoided a potential upset against Chris Dobey.

Dobey produced the performance of his life, rattling in finishes of 86, 130, 143 and 87 to put van Gerwen on the back foot needing to win both the last two legs. But the Dutchman lived up to his billing and after levelling the match with a 111 check out he pulled out an 11-darter with two maximums and a showbiz double 12, double 10 finish to edge through.

In the semi-finals, he came through a scrappy clash with the in-form Joe Cullen to secure a 6-1 victory and reach the final two. Cullen couldn’t find the form that had seen him demolish Gary Anderson 6-0 in the previous round and was easily brushed aside, despite a 180 in the opening leg which was the tournament’s 200th.

A 130 check-out helped van Gerwen to a 2-0 lead and even though Cullen avoided being blanked by taking the fifth leg, the result was never in doubt. Wright was also impressive throughout and coasted in to the semi-finals with a 6-2 despite a brave display from James Richardson

Richardson averaged 110 over the first half of the match but fell away as Wright remained consistent throughout and wrapped up the win with a 101.78 average.
After opening up a 3-1 lead, Wright’s advantage was cut in half as Richardson took out 100 in the fifth leg but the world number five then assumed control to book his place in the last four.

The Scot then made it through to a fourth career European Tour final with a 6-4 victory over number two seed Michael Smith – who beat Ian White to reach the final four. In an encounter when neither player found top gear, Wright recorded the game’s only break of throw in the third leg with the highest finish either player could muster – 86 – and it proved decisive.

Smith, visibly unwell on stage, couldn’t regain parity and Wright kept his composure to reach the last two. But come the final, it was an all too familiar story for Wright as he succumbed to defeat at the hands of van Gerwen once more.

Manchester’s Loose, 19, won his first title as he came through to pick up the £2,000 first prize in Wigan in the first of 19 £10,000 Development Tour events being held this year.

Loose overcame Kieran Wilkinson, Daniel Varney, Cameron Hinchcliffe and Fredi Gselmann to reach the last 16 before defeating former PDC winners Josh Payne and Adam Hunt. He then edged out Charlie Beaumont to reach the final, where he produced his best display of the day to defeat former World Youth Championship finalist Rowby-John Rodriguez in a dominant 4-0 victory.

Loose would be denied the chance to complete a daily double with an early loss to Bradley Kirk – a double winner on the 2015 Development Tour – before Ireland’s Steve Lennon took the spoils in Event Two for his first PDC win.

Carlow’s Lennon, 22, defeated Adam King, Charlie Burns and Adam Watson to reach the last 16 and showed his class by dropping just four legs over his next three games as he saw off David Carr, Luke Humphries and Scott Dale to reach the final.

His next challenge came in the form of 2013 Challenge Tour event winner Kurt Parry, but he again proved too strong as he ran out an eventual 4-2 winner. The PDC Unicorn Development Tour weekend continues on Sunday (March 27) with Event Three and Event Four in Wigan.

Template - Date: Betway Premier League Night 8 – Liverpool

ROBERT THORNTON threw the Betway Premier League elimination battle wide open by defeating Michael Smith and drawing with Michael van Gerwen in Liverpool on Thursday, as Gary Anderson joined a three-way tie at the top of the table.

World Grand Prix champion Thornton doubled up at the Echo Arena to play his game in hand after missing the league night in Newcastle last month through illness. The Scot entered the night two points adrift at the foot of the table, but after defeating Michael Smith 7-5 in his opening game – his first victory of the season – he claimed a hard-fought draw with world number one Michael van Gerwen.

The three points move Thornton above Smith and Dave Chisnall at the foot of the league table, with the bottom two players after next Thursday’s Judgement Night being eliminated from the £725,000 tournament. “It was a really good night for me,” said Thornton. “People know I’m a fighter and I’m not going to be knocked out without a battle.

“To get the win over Michael Smith was really good because he didn’t give in, and I knew I had to give it everything I had in my second match against Michael van Gerwen, so to get a draw against him is good too. “This has been a big boost to my confidence going into Judgement Night and the big thing is that it’s in my hands now. I’m using new darts – with longer points and a better grip – and I think I proved I’m almost back to my best.”

Chisnall has found himself drawn into the elimination battle with five successive defeats, as reigning Premier League champion Gary Anderson saw off the St Helens-born ace 7-4 in their game. Chisnall forced some nervous moments for the World Champion as he hit back from 4-1 down, but Anderson held on to claim his sixth successive victory as he moved onto 12 points at the top of the table.

“It’s good and I’m happy with how things are going at the moment,” said Anderson. “I was fine early in the game but then I made a few stupid mistakes and Dave came back at me, but I stuck in had a good last leg.” Anderson now sits level with van Gerwen and Phil Taylor at the head of the standings, with the Dutchman conceding his disappointment after drawing for a second successive week.

“It’s a point dropped,” said van Gerwen. “I’ve not been well this week but if you still come here you want to win the game and you think you can win, but I made too many mistakes.” Peter Wright hit back from 6-4 down to claim a draw with Taylor, who took out 141 earlier in the game but paid for three missed match darts as the Scot followed a 111 checkout with a 13-darter to snatch a point.

“I’m happy to get the draw but I wasn’t totally happy with my performance,” admitted Wright. “It was my birthday the other week and Phil gave me a present today – he gave me a shot at the 111 and I had to take it. “In the past couple of weeks I’ve played Michael van Gerwen, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson at their best, so it was nice to get a break tonight and I took it.”

Taylor, who claimed a second successive draw, said: “I’m gutted not to have taken both points but the draw was probably the right score. His 111 finish was brilliant and the league’s a scrap at the moment and I’m enjoying it. “It’s another point in the league and it’s all about pushing towards the Play-Offs but I should have had two points – last week I was pleased that I got a point but this week I’m not pleased with just one and it wasn’t good enough.”

Adrian Lewis picked up his fifth victory of the season with a narrow 7-5 win over Raymond van Barneveld, who traded 104 checkouts with the Stoke ace before the 2011 runner-up claimed the deciding leg against the throw for the points. “Raymond scored better than me and his 104 was superb but I hit the right shots at the right time and I’m glad to have got the job done,” said Lewis. “I finished well and I’m happy with that but my scoring was terrible so I’ve still got something to work on.”

Next Thursday’s Judgement Night in Cardiff will see the bottom two players eliminated, with Smith facing Taylor before Chisnall meets Wright, and Thornton then plays Lewis in a game which may decide his fate. The night also sees Dutch rivals van Gerwen and van Barneveld face off, while Anderson plays James Wade – the 2009 Premier League champion who sat out the night in Liverpool after doubling up in Thornton’s absence earlier this season.

Template - Date: PDC Unicorn Challenge Tours 1 & 2 Wigan – Saturday

York youngster Quantock, 24, followed up last September’s previous Challenge Tour victory by taking the £2,000 top prize in the first of 16 £10,000 tournaments being held this year.

His win in Wigan saw him deny Hastings’ Cross, who reached the last 32 of the recent Coral UK Open as a Rileys Amateur Qualifier – where Michael van Gerwen hit a nine-darter and two 170 checkouts to defeat him – before opting to test himself on the Challenge Tour.

Quantock also saw off John Power, Ron Atwill, Scott Taylor, Lee Watts and Eddie Dootson before claiming narrow 5-4 wins over Mick Todd in the quarter-finals and Mark Lawrence in the semi-finals.

Cross’ run included wins over former World Championship qualifiers Alex Roy, Mareno Michels and Rene Eidams as he took the £1,000 runner-up prize.

Another recent amateur star at the UK Open, quarter-finalist Lynn, won through to the last eight alongside Aden Kirk, Mick Todd and Germany’s emerging star Eidams, while experienced pair Mark Lawrence and Kevin Dowling were semi-finalists.

Lynn, though, went all the way in Saturday’s second event, reviving memories of his memorable run in the UK Open a fortnight ago – which included a victory over World Champion Gary Anderson – as he took the £2,000 winner’s cheque as he made a successful return to the PDC circuit.

The Braintree ace defeated Ben Simpson, Sam Hamilton, Colin Littlecott, Ritchie Edhouse, Nigel Birch, Ryan Searle and Eddie Dootson in his run to the final, where he was taken all the way to a deciding leg by Modra.

Australian ace Modra – who qualified for last year’s Auckland Darts Masters – has based himself in the UK since competing at Qualifying School in January, and he picked up the £1,000 runner-up cheque in his best finish on the PDC circuit so far.

Four-time Challenge Tour event winner Colin Fowler and St Helens left-hander Dootson reached the Event Two semi-finals, while Finland’s Tatu Pehkonen joined Somerset’s Ryan Searle, Cambridgeshire’s Brett Claydon and Dorset’s Eddie White reached the last eight.

Another two Challenge Tour events will take place on Sunday to conclude the first of four double-header weekends in 2016, with the remaining events to be held on May 28-29 in Wigan, June 25-26 in Coventry and September 10-11 in Wigan.

Template - Date: 1 Year Anniversary – Mental Health Charter for Sport & Recreation

1 year ago today The Deputy Prime Minister The RT HON Nick Clegg MP helped launched the Mental Health Charter for Sport with the PPF Chairman Mr Brendan Bateson at the Oval Cricket Ground in March 2015.

The Charter was developed in a partnership between the PPF, the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the Football Association and the mental health charity Mind. The country’s biggest sports governing bodies, including The FA, LTA, RFU, ECB and UK Athletics, have already signed-up as well as all the professional player associations including the PFA, RPA and PCA.

The Charter aims to tackle the stigma around mental health issues using the power of sport and recreation, emphasise the benefits to mental health and wellbeing of an active lifestyle and to encourage the wider sector to showcase best practice and to make real progress in tackling issues around mental health.

Every year, one-in-four people will experience a mental health problem. Yet it is still something much of the population is reluctant to talk about or address, with 90% of people with mental health problems having experienced discrimination. This is something that the Charter hopes to change.

Brendon Batson OBE, Chairman of the PPF said,
We are proud that the player association have all signed up to the Charter. Players have a massive role in encouraging people to talk about mental health and wellbeing. This Charter will help to break down the stigma about mental health in sport and the PPF looks forward to playing its part in its implementation.Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation

Every year, one-in-four of us will experience a mental health problem. Yet it is still something the majority of us are loath to talk about or address. This is something that has to change.

We want to use the power of the sport and recreation sector to make our activities welcoming, positive and inclusive for everyone. That’s why the Sport and Recreation Alliance alongside the Professional Players Federation and with support from the mental health charity Mind, have created the Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation.

Our sports and recreational activities aim to create a welcoming, inclusive and positive environment for everyone including our participants, professionals, volunteers and spectators. We want to encourage people to discuss mental health and also to seek help and support when it is needed.

MHC

To achieve our aim we will:

  • Use the power of sport and recreation to promote wellbeing, with a special focus on encouraging physical activity and social interaction for their contribution to good mental health.
Publicly promote and adopt good mental health policies and best practice within our sports and recreational activities.
  • Promote positive public health messages using diverse role models and ambassadors to reduce the stigma attached to mental health problems.
  • Actively tackle discrimination on the grounds of mental health to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
  • Support the establishment of a pan-sport platform to work closely with the mental health sector to develop and share networks, resources and best practice.
  • Regularly monitor our performance, assess progress and take positive action on mental health issues.

Template - Date: van Gerwen retains Coral UK Open

NINE-DART hero Michael van Gerwen retained the Coral UK Open with an imperious 11- win over Peter Wright in Sunday’s final at the Butlins Minehead Resort to continue his incredible start to 2016.

The Dutch superstar followed up Saturday’s stunning nine-dart finish against amateur Rob Cross, which also featured two of four 170 checkouts he would land during the event, by powering to the £60,000 title in Sunday’s finals day.

He firstly overcame the event’s final remaining amateur ace, Essex’s Barry Lynn, with a 10-6 quarter-final win before coming from 4-1 down to defeat great rival Phil Taylor by the same scoreline in the semis.

He then produced a master-class against Wright in a repeat of the 2015 final as he again swept to victory with a relentless display, taking charge with an early 4-1 lead before the Scot pulled back to 5-3.

A 105 finish from van Gerwen was followed by finishes of 88, 76 and 74 as he took five straight legs to move to the brink of victory, with Wright taking the 14th leg and the missing double 12 for a sensational nine-darter, only to see the Dutchman step in to complete victory with a 64 finish.

“I played really well and I’m really pleased to win another trophy,” said van Gerwen, who has now won six PDC events during 2016. “I had four 170 finishes, a nine-darter and won the tournament so it’s fantastic.

“I’m working really hard and I’m glad it’s paying off at the moment. I love this game and I love winning, this is a wonderful feeling.

“Peter is growing into one of the best players there is and he’s getting better and better – but I’m glad I beat him today.”

Wright was left to claim the £30,000 runner-up cheque for the second successive year as his quest for a maiden major title continues, and he said: “He’s the best player on the planet.”

Template - Date: Betway Premier League Night 5 – Exeter

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN continued his record-breaking form with the sixth-highest televised average in history as he and Phil Taylor claimed their fourth successive Betway Premier League victories in Exeter on Thursday night.

Van Gerwen had smashed Taylor’s previous world record with a 123.40 average against Michael Smith in Aberdeen a week ago, and treated a 4,500 sell-out at the Westpoint Arena to another master-class.

The world number one saw off previously unbeaten Peter Wrighr 7-2 with an average of 116.67, hitting seven doubles from eight attempts as he moved to the top of the Premier League table.

Wright averaged almost 109 in reply, but was limited to just two darts at a double as van Gerwen recorded a ten-dart leg, an 11-darter, three 12-dart finishes and checkouts of 121 on the bull and 100 with two double tops.

Taylor, meanwhile, averaged 104 as he defeated Adrian Lewis 7-1 to claim his fourth successive victory as he kept pace with van Gerwen at the top of the league table, punishing his Stoke rival for missed doubles early on by taking an unassailable 5-0 lead.

Reigning Betway Premier League champion Gary Anderson picked up his second successive victory with a 7-4 defeat of Robert Thornton in their all-Scottish battle, although he had to come from 3-0 down before claiming the two points.

Thornton now sits two points adrift at the foot of the table after Michael Smith claimed his first Premier League win with a narrow 7-5 defeat of Raymond van Barneveld, coming from 5-4 down to take the spoils.

2009 Premier League champion James Wade bounced back from two straight losses with a 7-4 win over Dave Chisnall, with the left-hander taking out 121, 161 and 102 on his way to a third victory of the season.

The Betway Premier League continues next Thursday at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, which include’s van Gerwen’s meeting with Chisnall and the master-versus-pupil meeting between Anderson and Smith.
