BARHAM COMPLETES YOUTH TOUR DOUBLE
PAUL BARHAM won his second PDC Unicorn Youth Tour title, defeating Holland’s Willem Mandigers 4-3 in the decider in Nuland on Saturday. Basildon’s Barham, who turned 22 in April, followed up his victory in Crawley earlier this year by picking up the £600 first prize at the Van Der Valk Hotel.
Barham defeated Patrick Paffendorf, Hermie van Orsouw and Benito van der Pas on his way to the semi-finals, where he edged a tight contest with Chris Aubrey 4-3 after his opponent missed three darts for victory.
The left-hander also made Mandigers pay for missed doubles in the opening two legs of the final as he took command, with the Dutchman finishing 90 for the third leg to get off the mark. Barham hit three 140s in a fine 14-darter to win the next for a 3-1 lead, but Mandigers took out 80 on tops in the next to stay in the game, and hit a 180 and double ten to force a decider as his opponent missed four match darts.
Barham, though, was first to a finish in leg seven and after initially failing to set up a double, he returned to the oche to post double nine for the win.
He will move above Shaun Griffiths to second in the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour Order of Merit, and is aiming to retain that spot to win a PDC ProTour Card for next year.
“I’m delighted to have come through and won again,” said Barham, a protege of veteran Essex ace Steve Maish. “It was a hard final and Willem played well, and if he had hit his doubles earlier on it could have been different.
“My dream is to become a full professional and by going up to second in the Order of Merit I’m a step closer to that, but I can’t get carried away because there are still three events left and the World Youth Championship to come this year.”
Mandiger enjoyed a highly successful Youth Tour debut, including whitewashes of Italian Martino Tagliapietra and Rick Veugelers, a quarter-final defeat of Curtis Hammond – a UK Open qualifier earlier this year – and, most impressively, a semi-final win over Arron Monk.
Reigning Under-21 World Champion Monk pushed the 22-year-old from Eindhoven all the way, but he followed up a 104 finish by taking out 126 on the bull to win a deciding leg in progressing to the final.
Monk was appearing in the semis for the first time since February, while Aubrey’s display saw him reach the last four for the fourth occasion this year. Further PDC Unicorn Youth Tour events will be held in Dublin, Killarney and Gladbeck during October before the PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship takes place on November 4 in Crawley.
Entry costs €25 to each event, and can be made by calling the PDC Head Office on 08712 501 180 during normal office hours.
