The European Darts Championships was first played in Südbahnhof in Frankfurt, Germany and featured a prize fund of £200,000. This inaugural event was televised by ITV4 and featured 32 players, the top 16 in the Order of Merit (OoM), 8 qualifiers each from the Players Championship Order of Merit (PCOoM) and the European Order of Merit (EOoM). Phil Taylor won the first event beating Adrian Lewis in the final, the tournament moved then to the Claus Hotel & Event Center in Hoofddorp, Netherlands for 2009 where Phil Taylor was again the champion this time defeating Steve Beaton in the final which was not televised, but featured one of the highest Major event averages when Phil Taylor defeated Gary Anderson 10-3 with an 118.14 average.
The Tournament returned to Germany in 2010, when it was held in the city of Dinslaken with televised coverage by Bravo TV.
It remained in Germany in 2011 and the continued sponsorship by partpoker.net is still on board and will return to being screened by ITV4. The 2012 event will be screened live by ESPN from Muelheim, Germany with Phil Taylor looking to take a 5th consequetive title.
